The Fundamental Fertilizer PPM Formula
To calculate grams of dry fertilizer required per gallon of final irrigation water:
Fertilizer Amount (Grams/Gallon) = (Target PPM × 3.785) / (% Nutrient in Fertilizer × 10,000 × Conversion Factor)
Simplified rule of thumb for Nitrogen PPM using 75% solubility efficiency:
Ounces of Fertilizer per 100 Gallons = (Target PPM × 1.33) / % Element in Guaranteed Analysis
Example: 200 PPM Nitrogen with 20-10-20 Fertilizer
- Target: 200 PPM Elemental Nitrogen ($N$)
- Guaranteed Analysis: 20% Nitrogen
- Ounces per 100 Gallons = $(200 \times 1.33) / 20 = \mathbf{13.3\text{ oz per 100 Gallons}}$
